Stringing a Weed Eater

16″ Electric Corded Grass Trimmer at Amazon.com

Stringing a weed eater is something that needs to happen often. The trimmer line spools out as needed. Eventually, it does run out and then the restringing process needs to happen.

My weed eater has multiple purposes. When used as a lawn edger I see the line not lasting very long. Restringing happens often. So how do I restring this garden tool?

  1. Remove the spool from the weed eater.
  2. Clean out any old line.
  3. Determine which direction to wind the line.
  4. Loop the line around a fixed point and wind the line.
  5. Cut the line and use the slots that hold the line for installation.
  6. put the lines back into the output holes on the cutting head and install the spool.
  7. Hold the spool down with your thumb while pulling the line out of the holding slots.
  8. Install the cover over the spool and fire up that weed eater.

Removing the spool on my weed eater is very easy. just push some thumb pieces to remove the spool cover. With the cover off the spool is there to pull from the cutting head. I lift off the spool.

Remove any line remnants left in the spool. My handy pocket knife makes prying them out of the spool a simple task.

Line direction on the spool

Arrows on the spool indicate the direction the line is wound. When I insert the new line into the holding area I make sure that the line is going to be wound on following these arrows.

My weed eater is a dual line type machine. I use a fixed point on my home to wind the line on my machine. This way I can wind both lines onto the spool at the same time. That means both lines are the same length and will run out at the same time. I loop the line around a support post and walk away from the post about 10 to 12 feet away. The line is now two lines going back to the post. I cut the line from my large line container and insert the cut end into the spool and loop it in the holding area so it will not release easily.

I start winding the spool while maintaining tension on the line. Wind the line evenly on the spool. Once I am back to the post I hold both lines so that they will not unravel from the spool. My trusty pocket knife comes out and I cut the line. The cut ends are jammed into the small slots that will hold the line from unspooling during installation.

Thread the line thru the output holes and push the spool down onto the cutter head. Hold the spool down with your thumb and pull the lines taught one at a time so that they come off the holding slots. Install the cover over the spool and fire up that weed eater to cut off any excess line.
