Trimmer line

I had to replace my trimmer line recently when my electric trimmer went haywire and used up 2o feet of line in 5 minutes. The cutter blade and holding device sheared off.  The line fed out until gone. I found a replacement assembly online and now I have to replace my trimmer line.

To be honest, I am not pleased with the trimmer line. It didn’t last as long as I thought it should. Even when the trimmer was in perfect shape it just didn’t have what it takes to last. I have to cut against concrete a lot as I use it for my edging chores. I planned a brand replacement come rain or come shine.

Replacement line search

So I started my search online looking for comments on different lines. Unfortunately, with this method, you get comments about longevity from homeowners like me. Homeowners who only use it for their particular chores. You do not get a rounded picture of the material’s service life.

So with this attitude, I started looking again. But this time on the commercial side of the comments. Luckily I found such a review where the comments were from professionals who used trimmer line for a variety of tasks and conditions. This type of information is invaluable.

I also had stumbled upon the different type of trimmer line, round, spiraled, twisted, hexed, double layered, etc.. Talk about a quagmire. I needed to cut thru the hype and get to the truth.

Two new things I learned about trimmer line

In my reading, I learned a couple of things. These were completely new to me and as it always seems to be, something so simple as to scream truth but unseen until I read about it. As usual, it clubs me over the head that it is true. With my usual response being “Why didn’t I see that before?”

I learned two things. First, after a light spray with silicone spray the trimmer line will spool out more easily with less welding. Absolutely, why didn’t I think of that? Silicone spray will not attract dirt. It is slippery and reduces drag. Perfect for the spooled line. The second thing is trimmer line will lose moisture. The line starts out dry at manufacturing. The line can become brittle and break easily. Hydrate the line to prevent brittleness and breakage. So how do you hydrate it?

Looks like a bucket with water to store the line in will do it. Maybe a fresh empty paint can from the paint department will help store the line.
