The cabin air filter cleans the air that comes into the car through the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system. It catches any large type of material like dust and pollen before it enters a car. To make this clear, this is not a HEPA filter. it will let some particles pass thru.

Changing out the cabin filter varies by manufacturer. Check your owner’s manual. If you live in an area where a lot of dust is in the air you may want to change it more often.

When should you change the cabin filter?

Signs that you need a new cabin air filter. Are you running the system with the blower on high(reduced low air flow through the system)? Do you smell bad odors every time you turn on the blower? Time to look at that cabin filter.

The first step to changing your car’s cabin filter is knowing where it’s located. My cabin air filter location is behind the glove box. It is accessible by removing the glove box(check your owner’s manual). Others locations can be under the dashboard or under the hood and may be hard to reach. The owner’s manual will point out where it is located, or you can ask the dealer or your automotive mechanic to point it out to you.

Surface Area is important

The factory original has twice the pleats of the aftermarket filter

Some cabin filters are expensive, with the dealerships tending to be the most expensive. You can save money by buying a replacement at a parts store or online and do it yourself. But just because the filter is cheap does not mean it is a good deal. Look for the total surface area of the filter. Since all the filters have to be the same physical size to fit your car, the difference will be in how many pleats are in each filter. Count the pleats, the more pleats the larger the surface area of the filter. The more pleats, the longer it will last before it stops working for you.
