Slide out corner trim replacement

I had to replace my RV’s slide-out corner trim pieces as a result of age. Recently the pieces had started to show weather-related rot. I ordered the pieces after measuring the overall length. The corner cap comes in various lengths and designs so I measured the length and width. My pieces were five inches in length. The dimensions are two inches wide and five inches long. Finally, with all dimensions, I ordered all four pieces. The pieces are plastic and if one piece is rotting from age all of them are in the same condition.

How to do it

  1. Measure the slide out corner trim part for length, width and note corner edge
  2. Order the parts
  3. Verify parts received are the correct size and shape
  4. Remove the old parts
  5. Clean the surface area
  6. Remove any old caulk that will interfere with the new parts
  7. Size the parts to their new place(if needed)
  8. Install the new parts with caulk
  9. Admire your work

The parts arrived and a quick check proved that I had ordered the correct parts.

The old part removal was not very hard. The failures were age-related. They came apart in pieces. I dug out the corners under the outside edge trim with a pick.

plastic scraper removed the old caulk that would be in the way of the new trim pieces. I cleaned off any dirt with a spray cleaner and a clean rag.

With the area clean I dry fitted the new pieces. If I needed to remove material to get a good fit, I removed material that would be under the slide-out edge. I numbered the pieces and locations for easy installation.

I picked out a caulk for the pieces and applied the caulk and installed the pieces. One screw holds the parts in place, the caulk, and the slide-out edge does the rest of the work in holding the pieces in place.
