How CBD Oil Saved My Dog

This is how CBD oil saved my dog, Duke. But first, watch this one minute video to learn about CBD oil.

His name is Duke and he’s a rescue

My Dog Duke

Duke is a male Dachshund. He is a rescue. His is a history of sadness. He was with his original owner(a young man)when there was a horrific crash that killed the owner. I can only imagine what Duke went thru. He was probably injured and had to watch his owner die.

How our paths crossed

After that, he went to several homes where he was denied by the family of his original owner and other individuals. He finally got to a great organization that finds homes for dogs. This is where my daughter who was attending a parade noticed him and knowing that I am fond of Dachshunds and was looking for such a dog sent me his photo.

Don’t bite the hand that feeds you

I received that photo. While it was very far away I emailed that organization and let them know that I was very interested. We set up a day to meet Duke and arrived ready to check his adoptive status based on our dog JOJO’s approval. During this meeting, I found out he was adopted and returned due to biting the new owner.

So I was advised that he is a one person bond type dog. That means if your not number one your kind of out of luck. Well, I have experience in this area. My wife’s Chihuahua is very much in this same mold. One person bond, the other person is dead to him. Also if I would get to close to my wife he would think about taking a nip out of me if he was in the mood. So getting nipped by my own dog is nothing new to me. It’s not something I like, but I understand it.

Maybe just a taste

Well, the adoption transpired and getting him home didn’t happen bite free. It was my own fault I tried to lift him onto our vehicle’s seat and he felt threatened and not knowing me nipped me to warn me off. My first little bite. During our time together he has nipped me a few times. But these nips were only as a warning. Each time he could have taken a full jaw pressure bite but each time but he didn’t, he just closed his jaws slightly on my arm or hand to let me know  “don’t do that”. Each time not breaking the skin always a warning. This is his backstory let’s get on to the serious problem.

The serious problem

When we got him home I noticed that he had diarrhea. Not just a little, a lot and very volatile(almost explosive). We got him to our veterinarian who prescribed steroids, antibiotics,  and prebiotics. Along with a bland diet(boiled chicken and steamed rice). There were several other trys(with the use of pharmaceuticals)at getting him relief from diarrhea but nothing helped. An ultrasound found several things but nothing that could help him. At this point, poor Duke has had diarrhea for several months and nothing our veterinarian has tried has worked. She had prescribed her last treatment and it had not worked. After this there was nothing more she could do for him.

His last chance

While filling this last prescription the pharmacist asked who this prescription was for. It was that moment that I finally got information about CBD oil. The pharmacist recommended that we go to a local dispensary for marijuana products. It was there that we could get our hands on CBD oil for dogs. I talked to our veterinarian about the oil. She informed me that in our state she could not prescribe it but that she had heard good things about it. So my wife and I decided to give Duke a last chance. We bought a bottle of the oil and started dosing him.

The dosage

Since Duke is a small dog and weighed in at twenty pounds or less we started him out at nine drops mixed into his evening meal. We were supposed to dosage him twice a day. But I had nothing(previous experience)on which to fall back on. So instead of twice a day I started him out at once per day and watched him. Eventually, the dosage went to ten drops. I mention this fact as an example.

Dosages change

The dosage will change based on the product you buy. Different brands have different levels of CBD in each one ounce bottle of product. The rest of the material in the bottle is usually a filler(normally a cooking oil I believe). So the dosage could be less or more depending on which brand(level of CBD) you purchase. Just make sure that the product you purchase has a dosage chart to help guide you.

His progress

The very first change we noticed was that he no longer had night accidents. The night and day accidents were such that it appeared he had no time from the time he felt the urge until it was time to go. We were dosing him once every day at his evening meal. In that first week, he finally could go all night without the urge to go until the morning hours. But his stool still remained loose and runny. His personality, however, started to emerge. I took this to mean that he was starting to feel better.

When he had to perform a bowel movement he always had a tough time of it. He would exert a lot of effort trying to evacuate his bowels. He would assume the position and move from place to place trying to get things done. It always took a long time. At this point, he has been on CBD oil about a month. His stool had stiffened up to the consistency of a soft yogurt. Some progress but still very little.

Slow and steady

Over the course of the following month, his stool started to get closer to a normal stiff and dry dog turd.  Also, his time to evacuate his bowels was getting shorter and shorter. At the three-month time frame, he finally had a normal bowel movement, executed quickly and with normal consistency. I am so proud of him getting back to normal bowel movements. Also, a big thanks for CBD oil saved my dog, Duke.
