This article is about how to set up and use the Algae Gon chlorine tablet holder.  This piece of equipment is essential in eradicating black algae from the pool. I recommend it to all pool owners who are suffering from a black algae outbreak.

Why is this thing so maligned?

If you go to the reviews of this item you will see a lot of negative reviews. Most of the reviews are about the shoddiness of the product. If you look at the part you will notice that every piece of this chlorine tablet holder is plastic including the bolts.

Why plastic bolts?

The bolts and wing nuts are made of plastic. Why not metal? Well if you look at the environment in which this thing works you can understand why plastic over metal. My own experiences have shown me that plastic parts withstand the corrosiveness of chlorine much better and for far longer than metal parts which can be eaten away in a matter of months.

Breakage

Also, some of the reviewers stated that the part broke before they had finished the first cleaning.  This can be due to two things, overtightening of the plastic bolts or improper use of the tablet once it is in the holder. Let’s break this down by conditions.

Placing the tablet in the holder

First, the tablet holder if you will notice has a raised lip at the top of both sides. This raised lip provides a physical stop for the tablet. When adding a tablet to the holder make sure that the tablet does not extend into the raised lip areas. If the tablet should be between the raised lip area this will be the only area that is tightening against the tablet. The bolts can not exert enough pressure to hold the tablet if this condition exists.

How to tighten the bolts

Also when tightening your plastic bolts turn the wing nut in small increments and tighten onto the tablet then try to move the tablet in the holder. If the tablet moves tighten the bolt furthest from the pivot point slightly and try to move the tablet again. Repeat until the tablet will not move. As for the pivot point, you will need to do the same type of adjustment again in small increments until the device will not move/pivot.

Which way, side to side or back and forth?

The second condition is which direction the tablet holder contacts the plaster during use. The tablet holder works with a back and forth motion. If you try to use it with a side to side type movement there will be stress problems with the side plates and the plastic bolts.

Technique is everything

Remember that when this thing is being used its attached to a pool pole. Usually a very long pole. If you’re working on the pool’s floor(or any horizontal surface) keep the pole low close to the pool surface and always keep a downward pressure against the tablet in both the back and forth directions. You will find that you don’t need to exert a lot of pressure when you use the chlorine tablet holder. Place the tablet near the black algae spot and move the tablet back and forth. You only need enough pressure to keep the tablet pressed against the plaster. Rub it a lot of times on the black algae spot and the chlorine will attach itself to the plaster like chalk.

After using the chlorine tablet holder

After you have used the tablet holder. When you’re sure that your black algae problem is history. Be sure to remove the chlorine tablet from the holder and put it into the chlorine dispenser or chlorine feeder. Do not leave it in the holder. Remember chlorine is highly corrosive to everything including plastic.
