New Sugar-Free Bread

I got this new sugar free bread the other day when I went to the bread store. Actually, I wasn’t looking for it. I found it purely thru accident. I asked the bread store employee if they had whole wheat bread.

The Brand

That question started a conversation about different bread. Eventually, it got around to the fact that I was diabetic. That’s when the bread store lady mentioned that she had Sugar Free wheat bread. Flowers Bakeries is marketing the sugar-free bread under Nature’s Own Life brand. I was doubtful about its quality. I asked if it was sawdust masquerading as bread.

The bread store lady said that it was quite good. I was still doubtful. That’s when she picked up a loaf and took it to the checkout counter. She explained that she was going to give me a loaf to try out.

How it stood up

I got that loaf of bread home and had to try it. First just as a slice of bread nothing else. The bread has a springy mouthfeel. Definitely not your soft type of white bread that turns into a ball of dough when bit. Not quite as heavy as an artisan type bread.

I toasted a slice to see how it would toast up. Also to see if the sweetener they use to make the bread would change the flavor of the bread. It did change ever so slightly, but not enough to make the experience of eating it disagreeable. Also if eaten with anything else(butter, sugar-free jam, lunch meat) you would not be able to tell the difference.

The sweetener

Maltitol a sugar alcohol is the sweetener in the bread.

Maltitol is a sugar alcohol (a polyol) used as a sugar substitute. It has 75–90% of the sweetness of sucrose (table sugar) and nearly identical properties, except for browning. It is used to replace table sugar because it is half as caloric, does not promote tooth decay, and has a somewhat lesser effect on blood glucose…

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maltitol

One slice of the Sugar-Free bread contains 9 grams of carbohydrates. Versus 11 grams from their Nature’s Own Bread, 100% Whole Wheat bread.

The Sugar-Free bread contains Zero grams of Sugar. Again versus their Nature’s Own Bread, 100% Whole Wheat bread at <1 gram.
