New No sugar added Yogurt

New No Sugar Added Yogurt Triple Zero Salted Caramel flavor

There’s a new no sugar added yogurt on the market shelves. I love yogurt and as a diabetic when I had a supply of no sugar added yogurt there was always yogurt in my basket each time I went to the grocery store. Somewhere along the way, the manufacturer of the yogurt gave up on the no sugar added variety. It was a sad day for this yogurt lover.

How I found out about this new product

The other day I caught a commercial where they(the new manufacturer) claimed that their new yogurt was no sugar added.  It caught my eye and went right to the top of the shopping list. The next time I would be at the grocery store it was going in my basket. So today was the day that my basket contained a yogurt once again and I was a happy man.

Still, it is intriguing that British researchers looking at diet-disease connections found that people who ate low-fat fermented dairy products, such as yogurt and cottage cheese, several times a week reduced their risk of developing diabetes by nearly a third, compared with those who didn’t eat these foods.

Setting up the test

It was with great anticipation that I pulled two flavors off the shelf and into my basket they went. I bought a flavor that I had been familiar with(mixed berry) and a new flavor(salted caramel) to try out. Now understand that I have never had Greek yogurt. That the greek variety was introduced after my old manufacturer quit making no sugar added yogurt.  So with this new type yogurt, I was going to be introduced to Greek yogurt, a new yogurt manufacturer, a new flavor and an old flavor, and of course yogurt once again.

The taste test

So here’s what I found. The new yogurt has a rather pronounced sour flavored. My best guess is that it is Greek yogurt.  I had always found the old regular yogurt to be very smooth, creamy and rather sweet with a very slight sour taste. Definitely not overwhelming. I found the sour flavor of the new yogurt rather annoying. The sweetness of the yogurt flavoring could not come thru in either flavor. The yogurt had a thicker feel in the mouth and in the appearance when gathered by the spoon. This was to be expected and not undesirable. The mixed berry flavor was vaguely familiar. The new flavor salted caramel while not sweet was not as pronounced as I had expected.

Conclusion

First, I applaud the Oikos® brand by Dannon® for thinking about diabetics and producing a no sugar added product. The only no sugar added yogurt that I have found in my area. Triple Zero is the name of the product and it comes in many flavors. Thirteen flavors to be specific. If you like Greek yogurt then this is right up your alley.

As for me, I am still straddling the fence on whether I like it or not. My mind wants to like it but my tongue says to sour. Anyway, I have taken a wait and see attitude about whether it will go back into my cart. Hmm….maybe another flavor will fill my expectations.
