Patching a hole in drywall

Patching a hole in drywall large hole for patching
Patching a hole in drywall involves some of the same techniques as drywall installation. Attach the drywall to the studs, tape and mud for 3 layers and finally texture and paint.

If you’re cutting holes so that you can thread something thru the wall(electrical cable for instance) try to keep the piece of drywall from being destroyed during the cut. It can be put right back into the hole for the patch.

The replacement of the cut drywall is relatively simple. Some pieces of scrap will do as backing for the replacement drywall piece. Simply cut the pieces so that they are longer than the hole by several inches on both edges. Screw the scrap pieces to the drywall and then screw the replacement drywall piece to the new backing pieces.

Creating the patch

This first video deals with the hole and is loaded with great tips for drywall repair. The important points are the following:

  1. Pull away all the loose material from the hole(get to solid undamaged drywall).
  2. Cut the patch and then cut the hole to fit the patch.
  3. Taper the patch and chamfer the hole to get the mud deep into the cut.
  4. Use scrap pieces of wood for the backing boards.
  5. Using a screw if necessary for a hand hold for the scrap backing 1×4.
  6. Don’t break the paper on the drywall when driving the screws.

Tape and mud

The second part of this video covers how to tape and mud the patch with the thinnest layers. Again he gives you great tips on how to get the best result from your patch. The important points are the following:

  1. Use paper tape for the thinnest repair.
  2. Do not overlap the tape or fiberglass mesh to reduce buildup.
  3. Screed off excess mud from below the paper.
  4. Leave only enough mud to adhere the paper.
  5. Allow the layers of mud to dry between coats.
  6. Scrape off high points between mud coats.
  7. 3 thin layers of mud will produce the best result.

There you have it all the important points you need to know to get a hole in your drywall patched. Follow the procedure and the results will have you wondering if there ever was a hole.
