Offline Chlorinator Fitting Fails

Over time you will experience offline chlorinator fitting fails. These were a couple that I found during a routine inspection of the offline chlorinator.

fail#4
fail#2
fail#5

What kind of failures

This article deals with saddle fittings, compression nuts and saddle clamps for automatic chlorinators that are similar to the Hayward CL220 and any generic chlorinators that look similar to it.

The failure of these small parts is due to age and partly to the method of construction on one of the parts.  These parts are small and exposed to a very corrosive chemical(chlorine).  So over time, they will become frail and brittle so they need to be inspected on a regular basis. From the photos, you can see that the saddle fitting has become thin and is starting to come apart at the manufacturing molding seam.

The saddle clamp

The other fail is the saddle clamp. You can see that the saddle clamp has broken at the thinnest point due to time and vibration. I can rack up this fail to age.  When a chlorinator needs to be replaced I change out the chlorinator but not the saddle fittings or tubing. I leave any installed old fittings that still have life left in place and just change out the chlorinator. If the chlorinator is similar in appearance to the Hayward 220 the fittings and hoses are interchangeable. The fitting in the photo is one of my oldest in the system.

This type of failure happens enough that I have come to have a replacement kit of fittings and tubing on hand. You can never really predict when a failure will occur. I have found that you can not walk into a local hardware store and purchase these fittings. You may be able to find them in a pool supply store. But I can not guarantee that you will find them.

In the past, before I decided to have spares on hand I had a failure and found a brass piece that I was sure would last more time than the plastic fittings. I was prepared for years of service mentally. I was sorely disappointed when the brass part was eaten thru by the chlorine in 2 months time. If you choose not to keep spares on hand the brass piece will give you enough time to order the parts you need before another failure.

The tubing

I have yet to have a problem with any of the tubing or fittings for the chlorinator body(one-way valve, etc.) from any of the generic chlorinators I have purchased.

Let’s Recap

The failure points for the offline automatic chlorinator are in the saddle fittings with gasket, compression nuts, and saddle clamps.

A word to the wise buy yourself a “spare parts kit” and the next failure you have will be a relaxed situation where you reach for the replacement part in your spare parts.
