Frugal living: Buying by the piece

I was grocery shopping and lettuce was on my list. I was doing what I normally do. Grabbing a head of lettuce and mentally weighing it in my hand. Accepting only the heaviest head and discarding the others. Putting the candidate head aside as I went thru the process again. So as I went thru the heads of lettuce it made sense to get the heaviest head that I could buy. So now I had two heads of lettuce and it was time to go to the scale and determine the winner. The winner was four ounces heavier than the runner-up. After all, if you’re paying a fixed price for a head of lettuce why not get the most for your hard earned dollar.heads of iceberg lettuce

I notice that most people walk up to the lettuce and make their choice on firmness and appearance. No one goes to the scales. If the price on a single piece is the same why doesn’t everyone try to get the most for their money? The two heads of lettuce weighed in at 1 ¼lb. and 1 ½lb. By choosing the heavier head of lettuce I got 20% more lettuce for the same price.

Shopping by piece versus weight

When paying by weight the only thing of concern is quality. Shopping by weight creates equality among all the items except for quality.
Anytime I am in the produce aisle and I am buying by the piece I know that I will be making a trip to the scales. Will you? In the meantime, I remain perplexed in the produce aisle.
